What are good affordable reels that are good for striper fishing? I need to upgrade my tackle but don't want to break the bank for it. I've always fished private ponds etc for largemouth so my tackle isn't heavy duty for big big fish.
Thank you!
(Hope this is posted in right place)

Most folks start off with low end okuma or diawa line counters and work up from there.

I still use the Penn 310s. They are under a $100 a piece. Most of the bait shops have them. Along with the Shakespeare striper rods. The most used striper rod is the 7'6" medium light. The 7' medium is not a bad choice either. I use both all the time.

I am a beginner striper fisherman and I bought four okuma combo's that have Magda reels with a 7 1/2 foot medium heavy rods and they have worked awesome. I think I bought the 4 on ebay for around 200 bucks...they are good for starting out until you figure out the way you are going to fish most of the time.

Yeah - I have Okumas and Daiwa line counters with ugly stick and tiger rods. They work well and didnt break the bank. Im sure they wont last forever but they have served their purpose so far.

The ugly stick striper rods will last forever. As far as the line counters go we use a mix of okuma and diawa. Okuma is not the greatest but it handles the job. Always check you drag after you put out your lines as the okumas have a funny way of tightening and loosening without touching the drag star.

Do you know any model numbers of those. The only okuma I've seen are open face. Do yall use open face reels?

I appreciate all the input, I've printed the page out and going shopping.
Thanks for the ebay link, thats a pretty good deal!

Also, the ugly stick rods...do they say striper on them? I was at Academy last nite and I saw the ugly sticks that said "tiger" on them, but none with striper.

They have some Striper Ugly Sticks at the academy in Snellville. They are white rods.

Don’t get the cheap Okuma’s. You'll thank me later (mine blew up after a year). Go with the Diawa 17's or 27's. The ugly sticks do say striper on them. But I like the Okuma striper rods better. They give more in the summer when the lake is choppy. Tiger rods are for trolling with the big motor (u-rigs and lead).

And you may be able to use your big mouth bass tackle. If it's the real deal. I got a bass buddy that has nicer bass tackle than my striper tackle and he does fine with it. I wouldn’t go up the river and pull 15 inch trout with it, but you can cast, jig, transom bait it, and run free lines with it.

A real good economy choice would be the Penn 320 GT2...once accross the worm gear = 10' approx if I want a really good reel I'd look at the Tekota by Shimano which is available in both a LC or line counter version and a non-LC version. The Penn is under $100 as a combo and the Shimano LC's are in the $175 range.
