I fished with Tom, Dan, and Jim. We did not take bait and caught fish on leadcore and downriggers.

We caught all of ours on leadcore. We were out with the Wounded Warriors group and only one boat caught fish on bait. He did however have the biggest fish a 20 lber. Overall toughest day I have had in several weeks. Those four cigarette boats drove me crazy.

Between 1 and 2 PM I hooked 4 on bait,Landed 2 and lost 2(one felt large). I got one on a leadcore jig tipped with a herring. I had those cigarette boats well within 100 feet of me twice. They had to be going at least 50 mph.I left when it looked like it was going to storm.

Those boats were going at least 70 mph and one of them almost got air and flipped. Unfortunatly they were running a race together right trough all of us trolling, VERY DANGEROUS!

Red-Dog. Go home. I didn't see how close they got to ya'll (i saw ya'll down there) but i love them "go-fast-boats" running wide open. When you have twin (possibly tripple screws) 500HP screws, you can"t wish but your hand was on the hammer. If not, you may not be American? They must have been close to make the post?

We did pretty good downlining the first hour or so after first light. Gotta love those big boats especially when they mash on loud pedal. Open em up and let em eat. If you old guys don't like the noise and speed why don't yall fish up a creek. It is public water and if they are breaking any laws get they numbers and make a call if you are concerned.

If I had a boat like that I would get on it every chance I could. The sound was awesome. The ride must be even better. What I would not do is run through a crowd of boats fishing on a saturday afternoon. They got too close for my liking.

I guess I must be one of those "old guys." I don't get the point of running the same 15-20 mile stretch of water all day long, if you've got the money to spend on a boat & fuel like that, get it out on open water. They have every right to do what they're doing, but they absolutely came too close to us. At 70+ mph a distance of 100 ft is not near enough; one mistake and you will not have time to react and there would be a tragedy.

Like I said, they have every right to run, but stay the hell away from me and mine.

If I had a topwater plug tied on I am sure I could have hooked one. Definitely less than 100 ft. We packed up and moved.

70 mph on a saturday afternoon on lanier is stupid as stupid gets. yeah-- it's public water, which is why there's canoes, kayaks, 45 ft cruisers, jet skis, sail boats, and windsurfers all mixing it up on those morons' "race course". like racing pocket rockets on a crowded sidewalk. idiots, plain and simple.

So is it common practice to cast top water plugs at other boats with the intent of hooking it?

I think the operative word was "could". I think the point was that if anyone running 70+ is close enough to cast to, it's too dangerous.

I myself love to fish and i also love the go fast boats, Plan B is right, when you have that kinda HP you cant help but cranking it up, 100 ft from another boat is way to close, but 70mph on Lanier on a Sat afternoon is not really that fast, i run 65-70 on any day in any amount of boat traffic, i dont get close to other boats though, i say get the boat numbers and report them if they are breaking any laws otherwise deal with it, it is part of sharing the lake.

Respect for others is all that is required. Sharing the lake is not a problem, the former is on most big lakes.

Just for a little perspective, at 70 mph you are covering 102.6 ft per second. That's not a whole lot of time to react. I'm just sayin.....

Sure, here you go -

70 mph * 5280 ft per mile = 396,600 feet per hour
396,600 feet per hr / 60 minutes per hr = 6160 feet per minute
6,160 ft per min / 60 seconds per minute = 102.666 feet per second

Now this "old guy" is exhausted from all this higher math and needs to take a nap. sleep

Jim,
Now that is accurate. One could also show the time using 6,076.11 feet per NAUTICAL MILE as well!!

Maybe those drivers were professionals. Sounds like you guys shoulda got out of their way. Kinda like bigger tires has the right of way. They were looking at yall wondering what you were doing putting around. Wow that is a bold statement telling them to stay the HE double hockey sticks away from you.

I love watching and hearing those beast, my eyes are glued to em the whole time they go by. I hope to get a ride in one one day.
I think those 40 foot cabin crusers need to go away. They go 20 mph and make 4 feet wakes. Thats what turns Lanier into a ocean.

Lanier is the most visited pond in the United States. Aint nothing wrong with a little head to head running to see who is faster. Why don't you wait a couple of months and you wont see any of these boats on the water.

Some people just can't help it. They "want to go fast". Even fishing boats.

if race boats want to race, i agree with FF-- THEY should wait a couple of months until the lake is clear and the fishing boats are back up in the creeks. they can have the whole channel wide open shouting "look at me!!" to the sea gulls the whole time....but i digress.....

fishing sunday was not as bad as plan b's day-- no bloody electrical tape at least-- but decided to put in by the dam, and the dam store had no BB's-- only shiners. tried jumbos over feeding fish and they wanted nothing to do with them-- came up and sniffed and went back down all afternoon. had a friend's kids on board whining about going tubing, so persistence/patience wasn't in the cards. lost an entire leadcore line to the trees due to a common rookie error-- trusting a rookie to watch the line. spooled it before anyone said anything while i was watching the other rod and the graph and keeping the kids out of the bait. my tongue needed taping from all the biting it got trying to watch my language.

Don't know how you guides have the patience.
