From Jeff D. DNR
This event, scheduled for 9/24/05 at Unicoi State Park, has been
postponed by GA DNR. One of the tornadoes spawned last week by Hurricane
Katrina left Helen and then tracked through the Adventure Day event site.
There is a lot of downed timber from the group camp up to Unicoi Lodge
and Unicoi Lake Dam, with that section of Smith Creek covered by trees.
Management staff with both the State Parks and Wildlife Resources
divisions assessed the damages last week. Because of the inaccessibility
of the stream and the need to restore the Smith Creek bottoms, we have
decided to postpone Adventure Day until a later date, possibly next
spring.
The good news is that no guests or staff at Unicoi Park were hurt
during last Monday night's storm, and the park and lodge are already back in
operation, thanks to some hard working State Park chain saw crews. In
fact, there are some lodge rooms now that have even better views!
A commercial logging crew is already on the park to begin cleanup, but
it will take a while to complete that task. Additionally, several of
DNR's commissioned staff members are assisting with rescue and recovery
efforts in Mississippi and Louisiana. We apologize for any
inconvenience to you from this postponement, and look forward to rescheduling this
event and having our volunteer force ready to teach the outdoor sports
to Georgia's youth.
Please remember that other events will still proceeed on September 24.
They include kids fishing rodeos at Rock Creek in Fannin County, Buford
Dam in Forsyth COunty, and McDuffie County Public Fishing Area. See
