Some of the best striper fisherman do use open face spinning reels. I don't think the fish know the difference.

Get yourself a Quantum Boca or Cabo and you'll be very happy. I would get a 40 size. I have a Boca 30 which I pulled in a 20+ striper with it. No problem. The 40 is the same reel with more spool capacity. These reels are saltwater reels with sealed ceramic drags and stainless steel bearings. The drag system is absolutley the outstanding feature.

The Bocas have less bearings than the Cabos but you can actually buy the extra Cabo bearings and put them in a Boca. You'll also need to swap out the ocillator gear, but it isn't a big deal.

Now I'm a bank fisherman, but I have used my spinners with planer boards. I think, however, that for most trolling applications, conventional reels are a better option.

I use spinning reels for a few different things. I use some heavy spinning reels(Penn 450/550) to cast large Bomber lures at night. I also use some smaller higher end Shimano Spheros for free lining small threadfin shad. Either way, just make sure you have a good drag system. I never used them with planer boards much. But that personal preference. I'm more of a ABU C3 guy.

Spinning reel for me, but only when casting the notorious fluke. My buddy uses a big Okuma spinning reel on an Ugly Stick for bigger baits and planers and loves the combo.
